Modest Lads from London - Palace

Modest Lads from London; Palace took to the stage at Victorious Festival’s Castle Stage on Saturday. A black background with their name in plain white was humble for a band that was invited by Jamie T himself to tour after releasing only one EP (entitled Veins), and who were described by Vice as, ‘if Jeff Buckley and Wu Lyf had a lovechild’. The band met as school mates and began their musical experimentation as a casual endeavour, an attitude that is felt in their slow paced, reflective melodies that can be defined by reams of dashes and phrases adjacent to the definition - Indie.

The band have admitted in interviews that they prefer to perform at small, intimate gigs which was a long way away from this open, lit stage complete with projections that blew lead singer Leo Wyndham’s face to the size of a small car. Never the less they seemed comforted by the sun drowsed, beer satiated crowd on Portsmouth’s harbour green; their chilled out vibes were perfect.

Having released their Album So Long Forever featuring the infectious tracks Bitter, It’s Over and Have Faith only last year, Palace played as if the songs were written that day. There was a fresh spontaneity and soul to their performance that reached a gentle finger out and tugged at your lip.

Palace are going places, and they are doing it in a most uncompromising, unhurried fashion.

Palace’s next UK festival show is at Number 6 starting on the 7th September
