Bluesy Boys from Southampton

Black Kat Boppers didn’t have far to travel for their appearances at Common People festival; hailing from Southampton the bluesy foursome played two excellent morning gigs on both days to wake up sleepy festival arrivals. After forming in 2009 the group have become seasoned performers from Glastonbury to Port Eliot, Bestival & Hyde Park to Notting Hill Carnival, the boys have done it all; they have even performed a set with Florence and The Machine at Bob Geldof’s 60th birthday party!

Lead singer Roy Phillips teased the mic with soft low bass tones and

growling, stressed ‘ooooh’s that were reminiscent of James Brown. The singer’s knees shook like Shaking Stevens as he kept up with Dylan Clarke’s speedy double bass inviting bobbing heads and tapping feet as the audience sipped on their first cider of the day.

Songs from the boys’ aptly named album Boppin’ Atcha - Hey Young Girl, Hot Boppin’ Blues and finally Baby My Lovin’ is True were met with joyous surprise by the crowd as their bluesy, Jump and Jive, Doo-Wop style was unique amongst the up and coming Indie bands featured on the morning line-up.

Black Kat Boppers are next playing on the 24th June alongside The Hot 8 Brass Band at The Loft in Southampton and it is shaping up to be an unmissable, intimate night of Soulful Funk, with tickets at £15 for early bird, yet em while they’re hot - https://www.skiddle.com/whats-on/Southampton/The-Social-Club/The-Hot-8-Brass-Band---On-the-Spot-Tour/12952187/
